Chapter 2 Outline
Chapter Two: Earth In Space
Terms to Identify
Section 1
Solar System- The sun and the groups of bodies that revolve around it.
Planets- Major bodies that are in orbit in the solar system
Moons- Smaller objects that orbit a planet
Satellite- A body that orbits a larger body can also be called a satellite
Solar Energy- Energy that comes from the sun, and reaches the earth as light and heat
Rotation- earth makes one complete rotation on its axis which takes 24 hours. Rotates in a west to east direction.
Revolution- Earth rotates around the sun once and takes 365 ¼ days to complete, a year’s time.
Section 2
Tropics- Warm low latitude areas near the equator.
Polar Regions- High Latitudes and exist near the north and South Poles, little solar energy.
Solstice- The time that the earth’s poles point at their greatest angle towards or away from the sun. December 21st and June 21st
Equinox- Earth’s poles are not pointed toward or away from the sun. March 21 and September 22
Tropic of Capricorn- Southern Hemisphere 23 ½ degrees south of the equator
Antarctic Circle- Parallel 66 ½ degrees south of the equator, beyond sunlight always shines
Arctic Circle- Parallel 66 ½ degrees north of the equator, beyond no sunlight shines
Tropic of Cancer- Northern Hemisphere 23 ½ degrees north of the equator
