Ben Plucknett is a 1972 graduate of BHS and 1976 graduate of the University of Missouri. While at BHS, Ben set the school record in the discus and was a Gold Medal State Champion in 1972. While at the University of Missouri, he set the school record and was an All-American in 1976. Both his high school and college records still stood when he was inducted. In 1980, he qualified for the Olympics but was denied a chance to compete when the United States boycotted. In 1981, he set the US and World record in the discus. A mark, that is still the US record. After the completion of his athletic career, he took up farming in Sikeston, Missouri until his death in 2002.
