Robert graduated from Beatrice High School in 1961 and went on to earn his B.A. degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and his Master's and PhD degree from Columbia University. Robert has had an active and far-reaching career in the History Department at the San Francisco State University.
Robert began his career as a History Instructor in 1971, progressing to Professor Emeritus in 2012, which included such titles as American Labor and the Cold War; A Righteous Cause; The Life of William Jennings Bryan and Politics, Power, and Urban Development. Robert has co-authored three test books, published numerous articles, essays, and chapters. Then presented a number of conference papers, invited lectures, and panel participation. He is currently in the process of authoring two biographies with the University of Illinois Press.
Robert has been active in a number of professional associations, serving as Vice-Chairman, Chair, Advisory Board Member, and Co-Founder and Editor of several historical publications. He served as a member of two delegations of US historians in South Africa in 2010 and Russia in 2011. Service to the university included Academic Senate, Search Committees and numerous university-wide committees and task forces.
His efforts in the city of San Francisco include serving on their Historical Preservation Committee, the City and Country Planning Department, Landmarks Preservation Board, conducting San Francisco walking tours, and Docent training lectures.
In his retirement, Robert has continued to work with students on their MA theses, He continues to write and publish, and take part in community activities related to his historical expertise.
