John Bartels Friend of Education graduated from Sterling High School in Sterling, Nebraska, in 1956. With the encouragement of his high school music teacher, John applied for a scholarship to music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1960 and subsequently a Master of Music Degree. John also received his counseling Certification from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His first teaching assignment was in Wahoo Public Schools in 1960. In 1962 John accepted the junior high vocal music assignment in Beatrice. For many years, his student performed before a standing room only at the crowds at the old Junior High Auditorium, John retired in 2005 after 45 years as an educator of which 43 years were spent in Beatrice serving as a teacher, counselor, and coach. John is active in church serving in many capacities. John also devoted 16 years to the city government from 1986-2002 serving on the City Council and as Mayor of the City of Beatrice. John has been recognized with many awards for his volunteer work in the community as well.
